That big protective boot Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver was seen wearing on the sidelines of Thursday's exhibition game wasn't exactly a sign of encouragement for Packers fans.
"In a TV interview before the game, Driver said he's getting treatment on his foot three times a day and expressed optimism about playing against the Eagles, though injury information is notoriously unreliable because teams try to leave doubt in their opponent's mind about whether a key injured player will participate," writes Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
Not to rain on anyone's parade, but Packer Update had this to say about the situation, "GM Ted Thompson painted a fairly rosy picture at his press conference late last week, but a person close to the situation told us that star wide receiver Donald Driver is no better than 50-50 to play in the opener. By the way, that’s the same source who told us that Vernand Morency would be out for a month even while the team continued to insist that the veteran running back would only miss 'a couple of weeks.'"
As bad as the situation might seem, the Packers need to wait until Driver is healthy. The last thing they need is to force Driver back into action like they did with Greg Jennings last year. He just wasn't the same player after his injury.
And best case scenario, Driver is healthy enough to go next week. With Driver's superhuman conditioning and resiliency, there's more reason to believe he'll be ready to go than almost any other player in the entire NFL.
