The Green Bay Press-Gazette suggested today that the Packers may have some interest in signing free agent linebacker Roosevelt Colvin.
Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette reports, "There could be some players of interest, including Roosevelt Colvin, who recently was cut by New England at a salary-cap savings of $5.8 million. Colvin, 30, played in a 3-4 scheme with the Patriots the past five years but was a strong-side linebacker with Chicago his first four years in the league. He missed the last six games last season because of a foot injury."
The Packers could use some help at strong side linebacker if that player can be an upgrade over Brady Poppinga in coverage. But the Packers aren't going to break the bank for an outside linebacker. In fact if you're still dreaming about the Packers inking Lance Briggs for a deal, you can forget it.
Dougherty wraps up the Packers' situation at outside linebacker very nicely and succinctly by saying, "It's not a position in which Thompson likely would spend big money, because whoever plays there will come off the field for at least half the defensive snaps when the Packers go with A.J. Hawk and Nick Barnett as the linebackers in their nickel defense."
That's why a player such as Colvin or Chicago's Brendon Ayanbadejo makes sense as a free agent target for the Packers. They won't have to pay those players as much money as a Lance Briggs.
