Quarterback platoon

Let's assume that Brett Favre is going to be back in 2008 for another season.

Would there ever have been a longer period of grooming a potential starter than the time Green Bay has spent grooming Aaron Rodgers to become Favre's replacement at quarterback?

This special set of circumstances calls for a novel approach in Rodgers' development. Remember the ol' college platoon?

Understand me correctly, I don't think Rodgers and Favre should equally split playing time. But Rodgers should probably start to see some regular season action if he's going to be the primary leader of the Packers sometime in the future.

Brett Favre would start every game. He's deserved it. And there's no reason to end his streak of consecutive games started if he's healthy.

But there's no reason Rodgers can't play a series or two per game in 2008 if that's the case. Let him come in sometime in the first or second quarter when the game isn't on the line to get some experience.

There's an old saying that goes something like, "When you have two quarterbacks you have no quarterbacks" to describe the platooning of college quarterbacks that seems to happen so often. This wouldn't be the case for the Packers. They have arguably the best quarterback of all time that will eventually be retiring sooner rather than later. And they have a former first round draft pick waiting in the wings.

It's time to get Rodgers some real world experience.

I expect this topic to be controversial. Hopefully it will generate some conversation. Leave your opinion in the comments below.

I think this makes a lot of sense. Rodgers showed, in relief of Favre in the Dallas game, that he's capable of stepping in.

If the offense and defense are as effective (or hopefully more effective) than last year, then there should be a handful of games that the Packers could be ahead by touchdowns late. Committing some PT to Rodgers in such scenarios, plus maybe a series or two in either the second or third quarters....

I don't think it will happen.

McCarthy was reluctant to put Rodgers into the game in the 4th quarter even when we led comfortably..

And I also assume, that Favre wouldn't be very happy to share snaps in a regular season game.

I made a blog entry about this yesterday and believe it is a real possibility as well given McCarthy's possible recent comments.

I believe this is a broken quote and almost certainly presented to us out of context, but I'd still love to see the entire conversation.

It almost sounds like McCarthy is planting the seeds for a college-like two headed quarterback system if / when Brett decides to come back for 2008.

That would certainly be interesting...
