Of course, the Packers would be likely to draft a tight end this year given their lack of depth at the position.
So while Keller is getting a lot of attention, and Texas' JerMichael Finley has already been spoken about as being on the Packers' radar, one player that quietly had a good day on Saturday was Tennessee tight end Brad Cottam.
Originally I thought that the Packers would be likely to add two tight ends this offseason, one in the draft and one through free agency. Moreover, one would likely be more of a receiving threat while the other would be more of a blocking option.
Well, it looks like Cottam could provide both. He's left tackle big, so I didn't think he'd be quite so agile. But he showed scouts that, despite his size, he could bring some athleticism to the field.
"One likely second-round prospect, Tennesse's huge Brad Cottam (6-7½, 270), also helped himself," reports Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "Cottam ran the 40 in an impressive 4.63 seconds and had a 33-inch vertical."
Cottam had an injury filled career at Tennessee, but he really ended his season strong. Fans from the Badger State will remember his touchdown that helped beat Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl. And he also scored a touchdown for the South squad in the Senior Bowl as well.
Cottam, along with Missouri's Martin Rucker, are two Railbird Central favorites at tight end as they are impact players that the Packers could get outside of the first round.
