Thompson giving his thoughts

Green Bay Packers general manager has been talking to the media lately to give his opinions on a couple of different subjects.

One interesting topic is that Brett Favre hasn't officially filed his retirement paperwork leaving people wondering if that maybe leaves the door open for a return.

It also has an effect in that Favre still counts towards the salary cap until he officially retires, and that's a figure of around $11 million.

Thompson recently spoke to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel saying that the Packers don't need the salary cap room.

Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel also reports, "General manager Ted Thompson, however, said he had no concerns about the fact the papers had not been filed and was letting Favre handle that at his own discretion."

On another note, Thompson also spoke to the Green Bay Press-Gazette about the recent signing of free agent linebacker Brandon Chillar. Thompson insists that Chillar will not be handed a starting job and will compete with Brady Poppinga.

"We look at Brady being our SAM backer," Thompson told the Press-Gazette. "Now, if Brandon comes in and competes with him, we'll see how that works out. We're always trying to push competition. That's more of a coach's decision to make once you get everyone in camp and see how you are. With the four guys (Chillar, Poppinga, Nick Barnett and A.J. Hawk), you could do a lot of different things."
