Well, it's been a crazy hour or so.
As most of you know by now, the Packers traded their first round selection to the New York Jets for their second and an additional fourth round choice.
I was right about Dustin Keller going at the 30th spot in the draft, unfortunately just to the wrong team. If there's a silver lining, it's that the Packers won't have to pay their first choice first round money.
If there was another player I thought the Packers might grab, it would have been Virginia Tech cornerback Brandon Flowers. Green Bay only dropped six spots in the draft, but the two players I personally coveted the most were gone in that short amount of time.
And, of course, the Packers selected Kansas State wide receiver Jordy Nelson. I can say I've heard good things about Nelson. A quick Google search has him being compared to players like Wes Welker, Chris Cooley and Kevin Walter.
The comparison to Cooley kind of makes you wonder if Nelson could almost play tight end hypothetically speaking. He has the size at 6-3, but he is definitely undersized for a tight end at 217 or so, which is about 20-30 pounds short of typical tight ends. On second thought, probably not.
His positives will be getting open in the red zone, going over the middle, and gaining yards after the catch. In other words, he's a tough nosed player.
On a related note, during one of the autograph sessions I was literally right next to James Jones when the Packers selected Nelson. He was shaking his head and said, "What did they do that for?" He appeared to be trying to keep his emotions inside as much as possible, but it has to be hard when the team's first choice is at your same position.
I also asked Nick Collins and Mason Crosby what their reaction would be if the team took a player at their position, and they both said (word for word), "It's a business."
They might not be happy about it, but they appear to realize the reality of things.
