New look offensive line

There's been a couple changes along the offensive line in Green Bay, and while the makeup of the starting lineup won't be drastically different from last year, there will be some tweaks.

It looks like one of the biggest competitions from OTAs all the way through training camp will be at left guard where second year pro Allen Barbre will be competing with incumbent Daryn Colledge.

Barbre and Colledge have been switching off every other day at left guard as the starter through the OTA practices now in their second week. Both Barbre and Colledge have been talked about as possible left tackles, but for the moment being, they're battling it out at left guard.

Out of the competition at left guard is Junius Coston who got a fair amount of time at the position a year ago. Coston's future with the Packers seems to be whether he can hold down the backup center position.

Coston has thus far been focusing on the center position during the OTAs and has not been in the mix for a starting guard position like he was a year ago. That's not to say he won't ever be a guard again. Once the 53 man roster is set and the Packers can only hold maybe 10 offensive linemen at the most, Coston would likely be a backup guard as well for depth issues.

New fourth round draft choice Josh Sitton has started off as one of the top backups at the right guard position to Jason Spitz. The Packers coaches have said that Sitton will start out at right guard until he gets his feet wet and gets comfortable.

There's a chance Sitton will move around and join the competition at left guard, but don't bet on it. Very few rookie offensive linemen make an impact in their first year. It's more important that Sitton get comfortable at a position than have battling for a starting position he won't be ready for anyway.

Meanwhile, fifth round draft choice Breno Giacomini has gotten off to an impressive start at the OTAs, and it looks like he could be the top backup to starting right tackle Mark Tauscher.

That leaves third year pro Tony Moll battling with the pair of rookie draft choices for a backup position along the right side of the line. Moll's job may be on the line as he just tries to win a roster spot with the Packers.

Also on the outside looking in may be Orrin Thompson, Joe Toledo, and any of the undrafted rookies brought in to create competition. Of course, injuries will always play a part in who stays and who goes. Until September, it will be a wait and see game.

Offensive Line will be the most important of all because if Aaron Rodgers does not get enough time the season could be over before it starts.
