Offensive Line battles

Why would Green Bay draft two players like Josh Sitton and Breno Giacomini? Now when I went back into pre-draft billing on both these players and the positions where they were drafted, I was scratching my head a little bit.

Pro Football Weekly had Josh Sitton at the 46th position out of 72 players and yet Sitton was drafted in the 4th round of this year's draft. But if you look at PFW rating of Breno Giacomini, who was rated much higher than Sitton, Giacomini was rated 15th out of 83 players but was drafted in the 5th round of this year's draft below Josh Sitton.

So whatever happened on Josh Sitton's Pro Day for the scouts before this draft really turned on the lights for the Packers as to Sitton's potential as a possible right guard. James Campen was quoted as saying that Josh was able to play both guard positions and some right tackle along with the possibility to be able to play the center position, even though he never did in college.

What could make an immediate upgrade to the offensive line, even though its for a reserve positon, would be Brennen Carvalho (pictured) at the center position. Even though he is a free agent signing, Carvalho has the ability to play both center and left guard positions coming from Portland State. So impressive is Brennen that he won the Remmington award given to standout offensive lineman in his division. By having someone other than Jason Spitz to back up Scott Wells would give the offensive line that much more flexibility. Green Bay offensive line coaches can let Spitz just concentrate on one position. Also, that move allows other options to open, meaning if the Packers feel that Junius Coston days are numbered and/or Ryan Keenan or both. The Packers could give that some thought.

With the right tackle position being upgraded with Breno Giacomini and the signing of free agent Brent Considine, Tony Moll might be in for a tough training camp ahead. With the Packers organization motto of being accountable and available as players, Tony Moll was having a difficult time staying healthy last season and the powers that be, might deem Tony to much of a risk going forward, with the stingers that hurt him last season.

General thinking might be that Brent Considine will be brought back on the practice squad when all is said and done. I am in the belief that Orrin Thompson LT is in a make or break training camp with the Packers as well as Tony Moll. Practice squad can not be used in Orrin's case any more and Thompson probably will not beat out Colledge and or Giacomini to backup Clifton. Ted Thompson always goes with his draft choices over free agents signings. But then again who can fault (TT) for going in that direction?

The last contest on the offensive line will be for the left guard position. Allen Barbre was the rookie last year that was showing alot of promise. The coaches are high on his ability but Daryn Colledge is still the starting left guard. So that will be a battle to watch as well. Yeah, the Packers could start Barbre if he earns the starting job then have Colledge backup both Barbre and Clifton.

But that is what training camp is for, earning your positions every year.

I think Sitton was is under ranked. He helped, Kevin Smith rack up a huge number of yards, and it seem once he locks onto a guy, the guy isn't able to get him self off. I think RG would be his best spot. Also he didn't play C in a game, but did so in practice, but sounds like will only get a chance there as no other choices. I think Barbre is going to win the LG spot, and I hope somebody is able to beat out Spitz at RG, because I think Spitz is a C and is better than Wells. Another player that could make a impact that they didn't talk about is Joe Toledo. Toledo can play OT and OG, and he's 325 and at least before getting injured was very quick for his size. He was a FA because he was injured, and this is the first time, since his rookie year that he is at least said to be 100% healthy. he was a 4th round draft pick, and has a lot of talent, he has a spot at making the team.

I think Toledo will make the biggest impact.

I notice Toledo came from the Washington college football program, which has not seen many good seasons lately, but he must be talented to be taken in the 4th round. I believe he is recovering from an injured foot.

By why would Bill Parcells give up on a young man with potential. When Parcells is rebuilding Miami from scratch.

I don't know, why but maybe because Toledo hasn't been healthy until this year, and maybe because it doesn't think Toledo will fit he's style, and maybe he doesn't want people around from the years before he got there.

(These are all 100% guesses)
