Robinson receives release

The writing was on the walls for Koren Robinson.

Once the Green Bay Packers used their first draft choice on Jordy Nelson and used another draft choice on seventh rounder Brett Swain, Robinson's career with the Packers appeared to be on life support.

To make the odds even longer, the Packers also signed three undrafted free agents at the wide receiver position, one of the deepest positions on the team.

In actuality, the Packers did Robinson a favor by releasing him now. He now has a chance to catch on with another team and learn its offense rather than be cut during training camp and scrambling to find a job when the regular season is looming shortly.

The Packers tried to trade Robinson to get something in return, but couldn't find any takers.

"There are a couple of teams who are interested," Robinson's agent Alvin Keels told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "They just weren't interested in trading for Koren, at least at the terms the Packers were seeking. The Packers wanted a draft pick and a couple teams were offering a player that the Packers didn't feel fit what they wanted."

Thanks to the Packers, Robinson's career is in better shape than it was two years ago.

"Keels said Robinson was not bitter over his release and credited Thompson and personnel analyst John Schneider with saving his career," writes Tom Silverstein. "Both men had a relationship with Robinson from their days in Seattle and were willing to take a chance on him despite his troubles with alcohol."

Robinson's biggest asset was his ability to return kicks, but age has caught up with him. He's not as explosive as he used to be such as the year he made the Pro Bowl with the Minnesota Vikings as a return specialist.

The Packers have proven kick returners on their team with larger upside in Will Blackmon, Tramon Williams and Shaun Bodiford. Add in rookies like Nelson, Swain, Patrick Lee and several other undrafted free agents and Robinson just didn't have the value he once had.

He's also been troubled by arthritis in his knee that has caused him to miss a lot of practice time, which is in direct opposition to the Packers' philosophy of accountability and availability.
