Bush's last chance?

This might resemble thinking out loud, but could the switch to safety be Jarrett Bush's last shot with the Green Bay Packers?

During the team's Organized Team Activity practices, head coach Mike McCarthy indicated that Bush would be working at safety.

It's unknown whether the switch is full-time or Bush is just an attempt to make Bush more versatile and able to play multiple positions.

In any case, it's possible that this might be the last opportunity for Bush to prove his worth to the defense. It may be weird to say that about only a third year player, especially one with a lot of athletic ability, but declining production and an infusion of young players could have Bush on the fence.

Bush started out the 2007 season as the team's primary nickel back seeing a lot of snaps on the defensive side of the ball. But as the season wore on, he lost playing time to players like Will Blackmon and Tramon Williams.

Now with cornerback Patrick Lee being added in the second round of this year's draft, there's even more competition at the position, not to mention the undrafted rookies the team has brought in.

Safety becomes a position where Bush could provide some depth along with his athleticism. Right now there's currently only five true safeties listed on the Packers' roster so it's not like anybody is buried down the depth chart.

Nick Collins, Atari Bigby and Aaron Rouse figure to be fighting for the two starting spots. That leaves only Charlie Peprah and Tyrone Culver backing them up, and neither of them is assured of a roster spot. One injury to any one of those players elevates Bush higher up the ladder.

The fact that Bush provides some versatility in that he can play in the nickel and dime packages as well as play safety will only increase his odds of making the team.

Bush is still young, healthy and very athletic. He was a good collegiate track athlete as a hurdler at Utah State. But consistency has been a problem at the next level for him. If he can be more consistent, he'll have a better chance of making the squad.

Good article was interested after hearing about Bush being tried at the safety position as well.

Possible the Packers are looking at having only nine players in the defensive secondary. Only if Bush makes the grade allowing this to happen.

Reason for only nine in the secondary is that the linebackers could have six players this year. To much talent at that area for Green Bay not to take advantage of it. The six that looks to get the best shot are the current starters then Chillar, Hodge and Bishop. Bishop will take over for White as the special teams demon.

I think they could take those 6, but I could also see not taking one of those guys and taking UDFA Danny Lansanah or Marcus Riley for the long run. I know their UDFA but a lot of good LB didn't get draft this year. and I think these one of these two could be better in the long run. But they could also try to cut them and get them on PS. Both of them have every every good 10 yard times. And IMO if they work hard may could out of no where and be something like Bigby and Williams have.
