Green Bay Packers news has recently centered around the possibility of the trading for Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor.
General manager Ted Thompson has apparently been in contact with the Miami Dolphins about their interest in dealing the 2006 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
"Packers general manager Ted Thompson recently discussed Taylor with defensive coordinator Bob Sanders and defensive tackles coach Robert Nunn, who both coached Taylor with the Dolphins," reports Greg Bedard for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "Both assistants have a fondness for Taylor and would undoubtedly be in favor of acquiring the 2006 NFL Defensive Player of the Year."
It's been an interesting offseason for Taylor and the Dolphins. After reports the contrary, the Dolphins have more recently said they're interested in having Taylor play for them in 2008. However, all signs point to the Dolphins having interest in trading him despite a recent press conference in which Taylor denied making trade demands. And none of the craziness even touches on Taylor's appearance on Dancing with the Stars.
The Dolphins were reportedly asking for a first round draft choice before April's draft, but reports seem to indicate that they're willing to trade Taylor for a second round choice now.
But will the Packers be willing to part with such a high draft choice?
"Thompson wouldn’t offer Oakland any more than a fifth-round pick last offseason for receiver Randy Moss, so it’s probably a long shot that he’d be willing to offer much more than that for a one-year player with a high salary," suggests Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
The Packers do have a little bit more need at the position now that Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila is injured and Cullen Jenkins has been working more at defensive tackle due to injuries on the interior of the defensive line.
Perhaps the best case scenario for the Packers would be a mid-round draft choice and a player. With great depth, the Packers could afford to trade away one of their fringe players, but who could help the Miami Dolphins.

Question, doesn't Taylor play the same side as Kampman or can Taylor play both DE's positions with the same results.
I believe (TT) will give up a higher draft choice because 1) There is not to many more positions that the Packers need to go after. 2) Jason Taylor is a high profile, high character player that would be a very good leader both in the locker room and on the field.
Here's the kicker I still believe that Ted Thompson and Bill Parcells will be able to pull this off because both have a friend in Ron Wolf, to where it is a win-win situation
With the latest news about Taylor not wanting to come to Green Bay I have mixed feelings. While I think he could have helped our defense quite a bit (Just imagine how good our defensive line would have been with Taylor part of the mix), if he doesn’t want to play here I don’t know if I really want him anymore. I want the Packers that we do have to want to be here since they will then play so much harder so the team can be successful.
I also think the Packers defense will be fine without Taylor. As long as Harrell, Jolly and KGB can recover from their injuries I think we have one of the strongest defensive lines in the entire league. Jenkins’ play should improve this season since he was supposedly hurt most of last season. Plus I have heard that the team is thinking about using more blitzes this year (about time) which should also help put pressure on the opponents QB. While I think the Packers defense would be better with Taylor, I think our defense will also be fine without him.
Taylor plays RDE (against the LT) and Kampman plays LDE (against the RT), so they play different sides.
I really don't think TT will give a 3rd or more for Taylor, the guy has said, he is going to play one more season, and doesn't know after that, plus he wants to get into Holly Wood soon, so it's most likely he isn't going to play much longer.
And while I have great respect for Taylor and what he can do, I wouldn't give much up for him unless he willing to play at least 3 more seasons, and hopefully we can get that in writing.
Plus the rumor that Taylor doesn't want to come to GB. Doesn't want me to get him more.
I don't see a deal working out, unless Taylor is willing to agree to play more than a season.
